The Jersey Journal from Jersey City, New Jersey (2024)

it it THE JERSEY JOURNAL: Wednesday, July 15, 1992 New York City garbage still can't find a home By Larry McShane Associated Press Writer NEW YORK (AP) Something was rotten in Illinois. And Iowa. And Missouri. And the Bronx. The trash train, loaded down with 2,200 tons of prime New York City garbage, was still rotten yesterday and searching for a final resting place.

But where the train will stop it's been stinking up America since June 22 nobody is saying. It's already been evicted from Kansas, Illinois and Missouri. New York says it's not coming home; New Jersey says it's not coming -there. According to a spokesman for the load's waste-hauling company, the rank railroad cars were due to head east out of Streator, toward the end of the road. The trash should receive a proper burial by Wednesday, said Dana Eisele, spokesman for TENNSV of Oklahoma.

The circuitous trip is the farthest and foulest since 1987's infamous gar-barge, the sea-going collection of 3,186 tons of New York trash. It took six months and rejections from Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Belize and the Bahamas before that garbage was landfill. Eisele would not comment on the final destination of the bug-infested train. Yes, it's east of Illinois; no, he won't say exactly where. Conrail, which assumed control of the odoriferous 30- car train on Sunday, had little to add.

"It's still in Streator. Arrangements are being made, but until they all are complete, all I can tell you is where it said Conrail spokeswoman Andrea Just. Residents of Medill, didn't need a roadmap to find the trash all they needed was a nose. The train, replete with flies. and other insects, was thrown out of town early Sunday and began the slow trip east.

The problems began three days after the train left New York for two Illinois dumps. Upon its June 25 arrival in Fairmont City, the train sat festering for 12 days due to a national rail strike. On July 7, the city went 1 to court to toss the train out of town. A federal judge agreed with them, citing health hazards. Next stop: Kansas City, where another judge sent the train packing July 9.

"You could smell it. You didn't have to get too close," sniffed city spokesman Robert Ross. Then it was all aboard for Medill, where the train arrived July 10 and was given 24 hours to clear out. The flatbeds and their funk rolled east through Monday Iowa before stopping in Streator, where it remained pending further directions. handled The folks at Conrail, which the trash three weeks ago when it left the Bronx, will be happy to put the whole mess behind them.

"We may have some news a bit later," said Just. "And we'll call just as soon as we know, believe me." $2M willed to state trooper and wife contested in court FLEMINGTON, N.J. (AP) When Gertrude Laport first drew up her will, she intended to bequeath her entire 40-acre estate in East Amwell, worth $2 million, to a variety of institutions in Hunterdon County. But that was before she met State Police Trooper Richard Kulas, who befriended and took care of the elderly widow in her final years. Laport changed her will in late 1990 while she lay ill in a Trenton hospital.

By the time she died in July 1991, her will stated that Kulas and his wife, Tara, would inherit nearly everything the widow owned. That did not sit well with the county's Board of Recreation, the county library, the YMCA and a variety of other institutions originally named as heirs. They are contesting the will, claiming Kulas and his wife used "undue influence" to get Laport to change it. Superior Court Judge Byrant W. Griffin heard testimony during the first day of trial on Monday.

He will decide which party is the true heir to the Laport estate. The first witness was Jeannette Kilheeney, a paralegal from the Lawrence law firm of Stark Stark. Kilheeney went to St. Francis Medical Center to bring Laport the new will and have her sign it in front of the Kulas and two other witnesses. Laport "wanted everything to go to Richard and Tara Kulas because she said 'they had been good to me," Kilheeney testified.

Kilheeney said she offered Laport the chance to call an attorney, but Laport said it was not necessary. Kilheeney described Laport individual" as a "rather strong-willed who appeared to be fully aware of what she was doing. The paralegal testified that no one held Laport's hand while she signed the new will. The trial, which is expected to last two weeks, resumes today.
