Ask Question?

As a four-time Mr. Olympia champion, Jay Cutler is no stranger to what it takes to maintain the physique of a top-level IFBB Pro. In a recent YouTube video, Cutler discusses why food remains the most challenging aspect of bodybuilding, explaining that he was once tasked with eating seven meals a day.

Jay Cutler remains a prominent voice within the bodybuilding community, even in retirement. At 50 years old, Cutler continues to maintain his jacked physique and challengedhimself to complete a body transformation before his 50th birthday. Jay Cutler unveiled his incredible results in a guest appearance at the 2023 MuscleContest FitExpo.

Jay Cutler Explains Why Food Is ‘The Hardest Part’ of Bodybuilding

To pull off such an incredible transformation, Cutler adheres to a strict diet that consists of proteins such as chicken, steak, and eggs. It wasn’t until recently that Cutler gave KFC a try for the first time, revealing that he wasn’t that impressed.

Considering he has been able to maintain a rigorous nutrition and training regimen his whole life, Jay Cutler recently shared in a YouTube video that diet is by far the most difficult aspect of being a bodybuilder, and elaborated on why it can be such a struggle.

“What’s the hardest part about bodybuilding and I always said the food. It’s like now I’m having trouble getting enough food in. Yeah, my appetite is good but it’s just making the time to actually prep the food consistently enough.”

“Especially when I’m moving around a lot. I mean I bring food to my office. I have my meals but I just wish I could be on five meals every single day. Five is sufficient.”

While Cutler explains that some people can get away with not eating as healthy, he certainly had to maintain a strict nutrition regimen to find success on stage.

“I think certain people can compete on anything I think it depends on their genetics. The shake thing is the biggest question mark right? If shakes count as much. I mean, you remember when I was training for ’01 I was having protein powder and rice and everything” Jay Cutler said.

“I almost won 2001 so I would eat some whole meals, but I was definitely having after training protein before bed sometimes if I didn’t have egg whites. I always thought egg whites were probably the best before-bed digestible.”

“Some people eat steak because they feel like it’s going to keep me fuller, but for me, I’ve always liked doing the egg whites. That’s what Chris always had me on especially since the first diet.”

Cutler started his career with five to six meals before joining forces with Hany Rambod, then he increased his daily meal intake to seven. He also had to make adjustments like switching from oatmeal to cream of rice or grits because it was easier for him to digest.

“I’ve always been on six meals, I mean Hany bumped me to seven. So, you know, that’s the common question is what’s the difference when I did all those years with Chris and then I did 09, and 10, seven meals.”

“I switched to eating grits. Oatmeal for whatever always bogged my stomach down. I don’t know if it was the gluten but I started eating cream of rice or grits. It was faster digestible.”

Jay Cutler takes dieting to the extreme at times. In the past, he would eat over 140 egg whites a day and purchase an entire cow from the butcher to store in his freezer. If that wasn’t enough, he would also buy over 140 pounds of chicken to accommodate his insane protein needs.

Diet played a huge role in Jay Cutler’s bodybuilding success along with his incredible tenacity and determination. Given his many years of experience, his advice and expertise remain coveted within the bodybuilding and fitness community.
