THE JERSEY JOURNAL: Monday, June 21, 1993 OBITUARIES Joseph Cerro, educator, work honored by state Joseph Cerro, 44, of Andover, died yesterday at Newton Memorial Hospital, Newton. Cerro, an educator, received many awards during his professional career.He was honored by the State Department of Education in 1992 for having the highest placement of Cooperative Industrial Education students in the "state of New Jersey. Cerro served as Cooperative Industrial Education coordinator for Union County and then Morris County, where he also was the job placement coordinator. Ed Bolcart, vice-principal of Morris Vocational Technical School in Denville who worked with Cerro, described him as "an extremely hard worker who got along with almost everyone if not everybody." Cerro was also the coordinator for the Adult Apprenticeship Program of Morris County, in which he was the instructor for a class on black seal boiler operations, high: and low pressure. Cerro also conducted a rehabilitation program at Morris County Correctional Institution, teaching prisoners boiler maintenance and some of the build- Timothy M.

Murphy Timothy M. Murphy, 67, of Edison, died I yesterday at home. Born in Bayonne, he spent most of his life there before moving to Edison five years ago. He retired in 1989 as a carpenter for the New Jersey Carpenters Union Local 486 of Hudson County, where he worked for 30 years and spent some time as its vice president. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Holy Name Society at St. Andrew's Church, and Knights of Columbus Council 371, both of Bayonne. Surviving are his wife, Delia; two sons, Timothy J. and Joseph four daughters, Delia Margaret A. Wilson, Ellen M.

Kazura and Mary M. Luc; seven grandchildren, and two brothers, Francis and John. Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Bayonne.

G. Keenan O'Brien Funeral Home, Bayonne, is in charge. Edward A. Tonges Edward Anthony Tonges, 70, of Toms River, died Saturday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in New York City, he lived most of his life in Jersey City before moving to Toms River nine years ago.

Tonges retired 10 years ago as an investigator for Western Electric, Kearny, where he worked for 32 years. He also worked for Pinkerton Securities, Trenton, as a security guard for Paco Pharmaceuticals, Lakewood. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Teresa; two sons, Allan Evans and Daniel; three daughters, Cindy Carlucci, Elmyra, and Janine; six grandchildren, and three sisters, Margie, Millie and Dorothy. Service will be at 12:30 p.m.

Hate crimes bill inked in Texas AUSTIN (AP) The widow of a black man killed by members of a white supremacist group saw her husband's death make a difference Saturday as Gov. Ann Richards signed a new law strengthening penalties for hate crimes. The measure bans probation for anyone convicted of a murder that was motivated by prejudice or bias and increases the punishment for other hate-motivated crimes. Carolyn Thomas helped spur passage of the measure with eloquent testimony about her husband's murder, Richards said.

Ms. Thomas' husband, Donald, was killed by a shotgun blast fired from a moving car in June 1991 as he sat outside drinking beer with friends. Three teen-age members of the Confederate Hammer Skins were convicted of the crime. The case got national attention when one of them was sentenced to probation. "I hate the fact that the three white boys killed my husband, but not all white people are bad.

So nobody can ever tell me that," Ms. Thomas, 29, told about 150 people at the emotional bill-signing ceremonv Christine Zuhowski Christine Zuhowski (nee Cardiello), 82, died yesterday at St. Mary Hospital, Hoboken. Born in Jersey City, she lived the last nine years in Bayonne. She retired in 1970 after 24 years with the Jersey City Printing Company.

Jean A. Harney Jean A. Harney (nee Barrow), 78, a lifelong Jersey City resident, died yesterday at home. She retired in 1978 as an office manager after 25 years with Eastern Oil of New Jersey, Jersey City. She was a member of the Forrestville Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Jersey City.

Surviving are her husband, Thomas; two sons, Thomas and Robert; a daughter Barbara Ellis; eight grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren, and a sister, Edna Malone. Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Church, Greenville. Greenville Memorial Home, Jersey City, is in charge.

James M. O'Leary James M. O'Leary, a Jersey City native, died Saturday at Christ Hospital, Jersey City. He was a court clerk with Hudson County for 55 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a Staff Sgt.

with the 81st Calvary Reconnaisance Squadron of the 1st Armored Division, which was the first division to leave the United States, invading Tunisia, North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was awarded the European, African and Middle East Theater Medals with three Bronze Stars; the American Defense Medal; the Good Conduct Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. He also had three audiences with Pope Pius XII durthe war. He was a member of the Catholic War Veterans, St. Michael and Hudson County Chapter, in Jersey City; the Disabled American Veterans; the Court Clerk Association of Hudson County; the American Judicature Society, and the Friendly Sons of St.

Patrick, Hudson County. Surviving are a brother, Timothy, and a sister, Catherine. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Aedan's Church, Jersey City.

McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City, is in charge. Sergio A. Castro Sergio A. Castro, 33, of West New York, died Saturday in Manhattan. Born in Cuba, he lived in Miami for four years before moving to West New York 18 years ago.

He was a self-employed mason. Surviving are his wife, Mercedes; one son, Ceasar Melendez; a daughter, Elda Martines; his mother, Yolanda Pena, and three brothers, Rene, Omar and Ramses Danger. Mirta Martinez Mirta Martinez (nee Sanchez), 83, of West New York, died Friday at Palisades Medical Center, North Bergen. Born in Havana, Cuba, she moved to West New York 25 years ago. He was born in New York City and lived there for about 40 years before moving to Staunton. Killoran retired from American Safety Razor Company in Staunton. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. C. Edington (Muriel) Thomas, and Mrs.

Schiring, 81, of Ridgefield, died Saturday at home. Born in Brooklyn, she moved to Ridgefield in 1920. Schiring retired as a legal sec-: retary, having worked for many law firms in Bergen County. She was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary at Zion Lutheran Church, Ridgefield, and taught Sunday School there for many years. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Organization in Ridgefield.

Surviving are her husband, Edward and a daughter-inlaw, Anne. Service will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Blackley Funeral Home, Ridgefield. John Grey John Grey, 89, of Bloomfield, died Saturday at home. Born in Jamaica, New York, he lived in Jersey City for many years before moving to Bloomfield two years ago.

Grey owned Grey's Auto Radiator Repair Company, Jersey City. He retired 10 years ago. He was a past president of the AtlasAnglers' Club, Bayonne. He was a Coast Guard Auxiliary veteran of World War II. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Reichmann and Lenore J.

David Fund David Fund, 87, of Bayonne, died Friday at home. Born in New York City, he lived in Jersey City before moving to Bayonne 20 years ago. He retired in 1978 as a furniture dealer for Central Furniture Jersey City, where he worked for 30 years. Fund was a square-dance caller and had a country and western music band called "Texas Dave His Square-dance Band." He was a member of Atlas-Anglers' Club, Bayonne, and played in B.F. the Lucky Strike Orchestra.

He did advanced course work at Kane College for the special certifactions that enabled him to become an educational coordinator. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having fought in the Solomon Islands.
