Mr. Hoffman was the son of the late George and Mary Hoffman and was born October 4, 1930.

Originally from Ridgewood New Jersey, he graduated from Ridgewood High School. He went on to NC State University School of Textiles in Raleigh where he attained a degree in Textile Engineering. He then served 2 years in the US Army as a Chemical Staff Specialist. In 1953 Mr. Hoffman moved to Asheville and began a long career with American Enka Corporation, a division of Akzona.

He served in textile research, technical service and several sales and marketing assignments including manager of the New York district sales office. He was later named Director of Corporate Marketing. His brothers Ken Hoffman and George Hoffman preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 56 years Pat Carland Hoffman, originally from Hendersonville, NC. Survivors also include his daughter Jan Hoffman Moore and her husband Craig Moore and their children Katie, Anna and Dillon, of Charlotte; his son Don Hoffman Jr.

and his wife Vickie Pruett Hoffman of Scotts-dale, Arizona; and his sister Addie Hoffman of Asheville. Olive Burton "Burt" Phifer, 87 of Marshville, died Monday, January 30, 2012 at the Hospice House in Monroe. Born January 30, 1925 he was a son of the late William Braxton and Susie Collins Phifer. He was also preceded in death by a son, Bernie Phifer, brothers and sisters, Warren C. Phifer, Pruitt Phifer, William Phifer, Lillian Craig and Ethel Barkanic. Burt was a WWII Tech Sergant Air force Veteran where he flew 42 missions in the South Pacific.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Burt will be held Saturday at 2 pm at the Marshville United Methodist Church. Burial will be private. Chris worked as a freelance sound engineer with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees including the Knight Theater, Performing Art Center, Bank of America and several other organizations and corporate clients. One of his favorite jobs was working with the North Carolina Dance Theater's annual performance of The Nutcracker at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. He served as the entertainment producer at Charlotte's Festival in the Park, beginning in 2004 when he took the job previously held by his father, John Burchett.

Chris had helped at the festival since he was eleven years old, developing his passion for the performing arts. He is a veteran of the US Air Force. Chris was predeceased by his mother, Lee Burchett. He is survived by his father and his wife, John Beverley Burchett; brother, Dean Burchett; nephew Andy; brother Robert Jenkins; sister, Michelle husband Jeremy Rabon; niece nephew, Addison Ethan. Ralph Eugene Nantz STANLEY Ralph Eugene Nantz, 73 of Stanley, N.C. died at home, on Sunday, January 29, 2012, after a long illness. He was the son of the late William Blaine Nantz and Lucy Bollinger Nantz Wise. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Thurman, Lewis, Glenn, and Acy Nantz. Ralph was born in Lincoln County, N.C.

and lived there most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran, the former proprietor of Plank Road Grocery, and the former owner and promoter of East Lincoln Motor Speedway. Ralph enjoyed watching sports and auto racing. He was a devoted husband and father who loved to spend time with his family and friends.

He and his wife were married for 53 years. Ralph is survived by his wife, Joanne Barber Nantz, daughter and son-in-law Donna and Keith Frye, daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Steve Ledbetter, all of Stanley, N.C. He was born in Cleveland County, NC on January 29, 1926, son of the late Hubert Corwin Carmichael and Mullie Alexander Carmichael. George Kantsios George Kantsios passed away Monday morning, January 30, 2012, due to complications from chemotherapy. George was born in Charlotte on September 16, 1957 and attended Myers Park High School.

He graduated from UNCC and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. He worked for First Union and Bank of America during his career and was very involved in the community. George was the epitome of strength, courage, and faith. He had many challenges during his life, but rose to the challenge each and every time. His friends, family and community were dear to his heart.

George served on the Board of Directors of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association; a leader of the Belk College of Business Alumni Interest Group for many years, and served as a board member and treasurer of the Parish Council of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral where he also taught Sunday school and coached girls basketball. He also was involved with the Chamber of Commerce and the Charlotte Jaycees. Some of his challenges included developing Alopecia (loss of hair) as a child, which had a great affect on him. It helped shape his character and strength. As an adult, both kidneys failed and he had to endure hours of dialysis each week for eight years.

In October, 2010, George was blessed with a kidney transplant. A number of relapses occurred, but he finally prevailed. In April 2011, George was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). During all these obstacles in his life, George maintained a positive attitude and good sense of humor that made him one of those special people on earth. George is survived by his brothers Tom Kantsios and wife Stephanie of Atlanta; Nick Kantsios and his wife Cindy of Charlotte; and, nieces and nephews Emily, William, Maliyah, Grant, and Anna.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mahony, Lisa and all those at Carolina's Hemotology; Drs. Hart, Chuang, Fotiadis, and all those at Metrolina Nephrology; all the special doctors and nurses at Carolina's Medical Hospital.
